Flanders thirds: The thirds were Spanish infantry units, created by the House of Austria. They have their origin in the expeditionary army corps of the Great Captain, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba. It is believed that they could have been inspired by the Roman "terce". They kept the Spanish Empire afloat during the 16th and 17th centuries. They are characterized by being brave soldiers of enormous courage. The Flanders Thirds, as their name indicates, had their main scene of action, Flanders, (now the Netherlands), where they achieved their greatest feats.
