This coif is made of durable canvas and lined with a lightweight cotton fabric. It has a snug fit, covers your hair, and can be secured under the chin with ties.
Throughout the Middle Ages, headdresses were very common for both men and women. Bonnets of the type offered here were predominantly worn by men and boys, but were also popular with women, regardless of walk of life. While the lower classes often wore them to work to protect themselves from the sun and dirt, the middle classes often wore them under their royal headdresses, knights (in a padded version) under their chainmail caps, and kings beneath their crowns. They were also used as protection against parasites such as lice.
The coif was a basic item of clothing in the Middle Ages, as shown by numerous historical illustrations, for example the Rutland Psalter, an illuminated manuscript, or the Morgan Bible (also known as the Maciejowski Bible or the Crusader Bible), an illustrated bible from the 13th century.
