The term rapier sword, has its origin in Spain during the fifteenth century, and refers to the type of swords that men used to carry, when they were dressed in civilian clothes. Thus, the rapier was part of the clothing itself; It could be used as an offensive or defensive weapon. The term "rope" is named in some verses by Juan de Mena. Also in the Inventory of Objects of the Duke D. Álvaro de Zúñiga, dated 1468. From Spain the term "rapier sword" will travel to France, where it is translated as rapière or to England with the name rapier. The rapier evolves in its hilt, from having a series of metallic arches (loop or hawks), to practically having the hand covered by metal plates (shell), to finally have a cup shape (bowl).
